About
The Widows Well is a 501c3 that lives out James 1:27, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress” by providing Widows under 60 with financial support and access to resources to promote financial independence, physical promotion and emotional well-being.
Our Origin
Picture it January 5, 2022, a real estate mogul, philanthropist, husband, and most importantly, father of 6-year-old twins is called home at the young age of 39 due to COVID complications. Leaving his wife of 9 years to grieve and take on more than anyone should ever have to handle; substantial financial debt amidst one of the worst economic times in history. As if grief isn't enough. The weight of this debt wouldn't have even been a factor had the life insurance policy her husband purchased been paid to her. This policy's denial caused the newly titled widow to be forced to begin creating a plan to pay close to $1 million to debtors. Yes, you read that right, almost $1 million.
Although there were savings and a small policy, it wasn’t anything near $1 million. I know what you're thinking; she has assets, but remember, the economy is tanking. For the first time ever, LaToya had to pay buyers to purchase homes that, just before 2022, she had equity in and could have lived off of amidst this decision. Can you imagine the stress and torture of the potential further loss and displacement of her and her children? Well, you don't have to because God provided for her by sending her what she now refers to as "The Widow's Well." Each time something was needed, not just financially but emotionally, physically, and spiritually God directed her to or directed it towards her, his provision.
Throughout this process, I remember thinking, "but what about the people that don't have the resources I have." The business/financial savvy to even start initiating a plan; childcare while you go get a good night’s sleep or dinner with a companion; a person that can help take care of the business when you are too exhausted to think straight; someone to pay for therapy so you can begin to heal; a neighbor across the street when you feel the darkness making death seem so much like the light; someone to fix something YouTube can't explain; a financial guardian angel saying I'll take care of this, and the list goes on and on. How in the world do they survive? At the origin of that thought, LaToya knew that this was one of the purposes birthed from the pain. But what is it? What do I call it? Sitting in a restaurant with a friend telling her this very thing and playing off of the word widow, Widows Well was born.
The Widows Well, a place where widows can come share their stories, and submit their needs, rather it is a financial or vendor/service request to help and get the metaphorical water they need to sustain them to the next moment.
